LIFE AND DEATH IN THE POND

As I was taking pictures of turtles and small birds a large heron flew into the little retention pond near our house. He stood around for a while on the bank and then went into the water. At one point his feathers were blown by the wind. Suddenly he dove down (see the splash drops) and stayed down a few seconds. When he came up I could see he had a large object. He carried it to a bank on the far side. It was a large catfish that was now dead. At one point he poked it in the side and it started to bleed.

It's episodes like this that make me particularly glad I am not a catfish. Just sayin'.

Did you see him try to swallow it? I wonder how they deal with those spines.
