There is another possibility. When one reaches a certain level of self-perceived importance, that perception could be just delusional or it could be supported by numerous friends and allies. one feels they can do no wrong. Thus, the ability to ignore those who are not allies or common sense. Either physically, through old age, or psychologically, through allies, the effect is the same.
