Some advice for XQD cards

I have a Nikon D850 and I use both a XQD and SD card. When I went to download my pictures on my iMac the only card it would read is the SD card which had my jpg files and the XQD card had my raw files. No mater what I tried I could not get my raw files off my camera. I use the cable to plug in my camera to my iMac and even used a card reader but neither worked. I could see them on my camera but could not download them. I finally found a app on the App Store called Cascable which uses the WiFi from your camera to download pictures to your iMac. This app will work with almost any camera that has WiFi. It took over a hour to get 65 raw file off my camera but it worked.

After I got my files off my camera I reformatted the card with the camera and now when I hook it up to my iMac it see both cards. Do you think I should get a new card or does this happen every once in a while?

I think you just needed to reformat your card as you did. That should fix the problem long term. I think the cards are OK. I would test the card a couple more time/days and make sure it is still working properly. After that I think you will be error free.

It must have been the original, out of the box, state of the XQD card. Formatting in camera made the difference.

This happens the first time if you don't format the card prior to use. Several others hinted at this.

I use a Sony XQD / SD card reader (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1219034-REG/sony_mrwe90_bc1_xqd_sd_card_reader.html?sts=pi&pim=Y) to transfer files from card to camera. Never a problem.

I have a D850 and use this same card reader, never had an issue.

Bob and Rob are spot on. Always, always Format-in-camera and, generally, Format before each shoot but AFTER downloading your images first.

Someone has to buy a new card and test it in the camera without formatting it. Maybe that someone will be me.

I had a situation that the card reader I purchased from Amazon could not read my XQD cards. Long story short, it was a bad card reader. I replaced it with a Sony card reader and the problem went away instantly. I guess the old adage is true, you get what you pay for. I tried to save some money by buying a less expensive reader, and I got what I paid for.

It sounds like formatting solved your problem. If you ever run into the problem again a better solution than a slow WiFi download is to copy the photos to an empty SD card in the other slot. That’s what I did before getting my XQD reader.

I use the same Sony card reader mentioned above for my XQD cards and never have had a problem with XQD cards in my D500 or D850. Just reformat the card in the camera first before using it.

I've had two XQD card readers go bad, one of which was the SONY. They still read SD cards but not the XQD. Reformatting XQD does not help. I got tired of messing with card readers and now simply use the USB cable supplied with the D500 and download to my Mac using the free Image Capture app that came with the computer. It's quick and painless.

I ALWAYS format a card in the camera before using it. Best of luck.

That's weird. I have never had a card reader fail, except for a very very cheap one. Best of luck.

I use a Gnarbox XQD reader. Fast and reliable. Not cheap, but not overpriced.
