I think you will find that the cropping ability that you get with the 850 will more than replace the advantage of the "extra reach" with the D500. Not disparaging the 500. I have one too. But you can crop a distant spot in the frame from a D850 and have a very nice, sharp, detailed photo as a result.

Thanks for your comments. I tried a few shots with the D850 and you are right about the detail. This shot isn't particularly interesting but even with cropping it does show some great detail. It also helps that it was lighter needing less ISO.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for your comments. I tried a few with the D850 and you are right about the detail using this lens. There isn't anything really interesting about this photo but the detail is nice. It helped that there was a little more light needing less ISO.

This is a photo taken with a Nikon 200~500 lens at 500mm with a D850.
And cropped

It's a Kori Bustard. Taken in Kenya on an African photo safari in February. But the point is that you can make huge crops with the D850 and still get sharp, colorful, very nice photos. You can enlarge that second photo forever and it stays sharp. They aren't the same photo of course but they are shot at the same distance, both at 500mm

I have run across Bustards in Australia but there they aren't quite as colorful. The D850 is such a great camera and I use it almost daily now with the stay at home orders. I checked my shutter count on my cameras yesterday and have 17,095 on my D500 and 37,530 on my D850. (I think I sold my D800 at 21,000) No wonder I had to upgrade my computer for storage in January.

Thanks again for your comments and your photos.
Cheers,
Steve

You are very welcome. I haven't upgraded my computer yet but probably will have to in the near future. My current computer groans and moans and stutters if I try to upload more that a couple hundred D850 files at once. But it keeps chugging along and I don't want to spend the money at this time. Yeah, Africa has several different Bustards, the Kori being the biggest and the prettiest IMHO.

Well, like most of us, still at home trying to do photography. Here are a few photos from yesterday with my new, to me, Nikon 300mm f/4 pf lens on a D500.

I set up an exercise plan by placing hummingbird feeder in the front of the house with pine tree in the back. I sit and watch hummingbirds for a while, then take the long walk through the house to the back deck to sit and watch other birds. Then repeat as necessary. I plan to do this all week!

My wife is not impressed, says my exercise routine is a bit weak.

Stay Safe,
Steve
