Nikon 2x Teleconverter

I recently bought a used Nikon 300PF. I am just getting into bird photography. I then saw what seemed like a good deal on the Nikon TC20E-lll, 2x Teleconverter, so thinking a bit more reach couldn't hurt, I bought it. Of course before I even got to try it out, I read some critical comments about using a teleconverter for more reach and all of the IQ I would be losing. This my first shot with the 2x and one taken without it. I'm happy that I got it.

I'd say that was a great purchase there, joehel2! I think modern (Company-specific) converters seem to have a better rap than the older counterparts from the "olden days".
These images download very well!!

At the very least, it will relieve some quarantine boredom.

I don’t have the 2X but do own the Nikon 1.4X and have beed very pleased with it. I suspect you’ll thoroughly enjoy it. I was given a Kenko and it was lame. Good for you. Have fun.

This combo works very well. The 300 PF is a very sharp lens. People buy TCs to put onto inexpensive, very slow and not very sharp zooms and they wonder why they are so are disappointed.

The biggest thing to be concerned with is the focus speed and accuracy for faster moving subjects or in lower light.

This is the issue I had trying to couple a TC to the 500mm pf....loss of focus speed and accuracy. When I put it on the D500, I have 740mm at f5.6.

For low light, I use the 300mm f2.8. I have found that it couples to the 2.0 TC to get to 600 with almost no loss of focus speed and accuracy. It's heavy for long periods of time for BIF or in the forest, but quit usable mounted on a monopod with decent hiking trails.

I agreed with the OP on the Nikon TC20E-III. I tried this TC with a 200-500 mm f/5.6 on a Z7 and the result at 1000mm f/11 is not bad although it appears blurry. Obviously, this combo is good for perched birds only, not BIF.

Joe,

How have you been since the China trip. The bird shots look good.

Looks like a winner to me! Good buy. I have an Olympus MC-20, 2x teleconverter and it has great IQ. They probably all impact IQ a little in calibrated tests, but doesn't seem to show up in normal shooting.

All the Nikon version lll TC's are very good, I have the 1.4 and am very pleased with it on my Nikon 70-200 f2.8 version 11. You have an excellent combination with the 300 TC.
