I have several pairs of the Vello units (Freewave series), bought used, and they have been fine. I don't use them a lot, mostly for remote bird set-ups/sometimes tethered (2.4/5.8GHZ video), so I can't speak to durability with heavy use/over time. Work fine for intended usage. Vello vs Ongnuo ?? Never used an Ongnuo unit (Vello is easier to say)! Read the reviews on both and see what others say, then choose.

Another $.02

I have the Yongnuo unit and it works fine. Just be sure to go to YouTube for a video on how to set it up. It’s manual is useless. Might as well have been written in Chinese. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Are either one of them made in the USA? I assume the Yongnuo is Chinese, but don't know about the Vello. I try to not purchase Chinese junk unless there's no other choice.

Like I said, mine has worked well but the instruction manual was junk. The YouTube video worked well.

Someone in the USA actually makes these type units? Before you say yes, make sure you know where they are sourced. There are some things you can buy US made, but not inexpensively...remote triggers, not sure. Even companies claiming US made by US companies source their gear and materials outside, and often are just afixing their nametag.

I've heard/read good things about the Vello and the Yongnuo. I own Yongnuo and it works fine. It is made in China but it isn't junk. Unless you have a built in bias against all Chinese goods.

I would be surprised if that type of products are made in the USA. If anything made in the USA it might be the el cheapo Wein Peanut Slave.

Both units seem decent based on the specifications. Your choice should depend on the specific features as to compatibility with your present flash gear and camera system. Each company has a website that outlines the features of their systems as to how many channels the incorporate and what exposure controls they facilitate.

I just answered a similar question this morning so here's a link to that post and yet another alternative brand that you may want to consider. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/tpr?p=11216125&t=646286

Most of the remote triggering systems that are moderately priced are, nowadays, all made in China. The quality is decent enough and far better than back in the day. Fortunately, they are sold by reliable domestic retailers that stand behind their products.

Stay well and safe in Brooklyn- my old home town- Bet. Sty. and Williamsburg

The Yongnuo RF 605n set has been a real workhorse for me, both for OCF AND remote shutter release. I picked up 4 transceivers for $58 about a year ago on sale. Solid performance. The manual is beyond awful so you need to be willing to invest time in some trial and error. Yongnuo speedlights have worked out very well ( 1 year of regular use, "0" problems) for outdoor, sunset portrait work.
