ON1 2020 Lock-Ups

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers!

I am using an iMac running the current Catalina OS. I have 8gb memory with a 2TB Fusion drive. Also Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB card.

My recent issue is this - after coming back from a shoot with a little over 700 NEF (Nikon) Raw files, I put them in a new folder in my catalogued folders. I began to edit them. During this process there is a lot of machinations - back and forth, compare this to that, check if I already have a better picture, delete, etc.

At least 3 times, when checking previously taken pictures in my catalog, I received the spinning color wheel. After several minutes, it would stop without the selection results appearing. The minute I would move the mouse for another selection the wheel would resume spinning. After a few tries of this, nothing would respond - I could not close the program, clicks were just ignored, or use the keyboard to close using command-Q or the three key sequence to show the running programs. I had to force close the machine with the power off button.

My version of ON1 is 2020.1 build 14.1.1.8943

Is anyone else having this sort of problem?

Any help is appreciated.

All the best!

I have had that problem and found it to be a memory problem, 8 gigs is not enough when post processing numerous photos you need a minimum of 16.

Woodworm - that was high on my suspect list. But I used LR6 for three years without any of these problems. I switched to ON1 because they migrated my LR catalogs and were not subscription bound. I guess they are just more process intensive. Thanks for response. Best. My iMac is one of the models that Apple will not upgrade - although it is not that old, so I can't just add memory. Guess I better begin the look for a newer more robust machine.

My iMac or MacBook Pro will do a fairly good job with 16GB but the 32GB my new ones have is better.

When I was having this problem, ON1 help desk said something about caches. They suggested shutting down my MacBook Pro all the way and then restarting. Every time I’m doing heavy editing on a lot of pictures and that happens, I shut it down and start again. It seems to work every time.

There is a page on the ON1 website that lists minimum and recommended PC and Mac hardware configurations to run ON1 PR. Without going there to check, I think you may be on the bitter edge. If not, an support submittal is suggested. I have found them to be quite responsive.

Yes, that and other problems. I checked my memory and like 85% or more was in use so not enough to handle additional operations. It is my humble opinion that On! 2020 requires a lot more memory than earlier versions so I upped my memory to 16 Gbs and so far have not had any problems after about 2 months. I am running Windows 10 on an HP Envy Phoenix PC at 3.40 speed.

I've also had it sometimes lock up on a PC when going to it through Photoshop, but not every time. When it does, I have to close out of both through task manager. It is a pain and I have a fast system with 16GB of RAM.

8 GB is not sufficient.

I reviewed the specs, the minimum is 16GB; in addition my IT folks checked the Task Manager and showed me that the program was running at nearly 100% and indicated that it would never operate properly.

I bought the upgrade in Feb.I asked for and received a refund (available until 5/26.).

I like Exposure X 5 and use it now. However, I am going to try a one year subscription to Capture One for $99 because they have a special edition for Fuji users.

Capture One has free program that is not limited to a free trial if that interests you.

it certainly isn't your equipment other than ram. I am running On1 Raw 2020 on a mid-2011 iMac running high sierra. It is the fast processing software I have (affinity, Lightroom, PSE, Luminar 4, and Topaz). The difference between your setup and mine- I have 32 GB ram and am running my root drive where On1 Raw 2020 resides on an external SSD thru Thunderbolt (1). There have a number of issues with Catalina and PP software so that could be an issue as well.

On way you can check is to see if your memory is doing any page outs (that is when it needs more ram so it uses your HD which is really slow). iStat is a great program to own to keep check of that and a lot of other system performance.

High MP images and new software applications are memory sensitive. You have to feed the beast. 16GB is now just a starting point.

Even moving from one image to another may leave some used memory attached to the last process. If your computer get's indigestion, exit the app and re-boot the computer. If, after a fresh boot, the computer seems at least initially to work better/faster, it's the memory. You need more.

Hi,

I have the same problem with ON1 2020. I rarely use now as I can't upgrade my MacMini (late 2012) above the 16GB RAM I already have.

I am using C1 and Exposure X5 which I really like. No problem with lockups. C1 handles Fuji RAW files very well. I highly recommend it. These two software programmes really complement each other.

Lr does not use system memory the same way On1 does.

Currently they recommend a MINIMUM of 8GB system memory and a discrete graphics card with 512MB of it's own VRAM, but they go on to specifying a minimum of 16 GB or more system ram with a 2GB VRAM graphics card.

How you pay for software should not be a factor in selecting software, btw. To stay current, On1 will charge you an upgrade fee every November, which starts to sound just like a subscription, doesn't it? If you've decided that you don't mind using outdated software I suppose you could make an argument for saving some $$ by skipping an upgrade or two.
