How to incorporate someone into a landscape

The attached Photo is one of my grand daughter walking in a flood ravaged area down by the Mississippi.

She is cut from a different pic and is trying to make it look like she is there, but, to me, it looks kinda fake. Pasted on (which is what she is. I tried feathering the edges of her, and using a refine tool but I am not satisfied. If anyone has experience with this technique would appreciate your advice.
I use Affinity and ON1 to edit.

You might want to try posting this in the post processing section. They would know just what to do with your idea and help make it work.

There is a little problem in that she is out of focus but you can try bringing up the exposure of the flood area to match hers and maybe bring hers down a bit (Balance). Then add some shadowing under her raised foot just like in the original. Then darken the area just under her plant foot to make it seem like it's actually in the mud. Also you can do a little dodge and burn to give her more depth perceptually.

Daniel made the suggestion I learned: to place a shadow under the foot. If you'd like folks to show you their ideas (though Daniel may have it all covered ), post the two "before" pics to PP Forum:

Happy processing!

One reason this will never look believable is the lighting, it is different. When inserting subjects into other images, one has to pay attention to the overall lighting of both, to see if they could be a good match!
