When I had a Canon printer I always used Canon ink, on our old brother printers we used generic, our new Brother printer there is no generic ink listed for it so it's Brother ink now.

Epson recently did an upgrade on my printer which would reject any non Epson ink cartridges. I now have an HP with the ink plan.

I have a Canon pro 100 printer and have been using 3rd party ink for 5 years. Never had a problem using LD or YOYO ink. The cost is about $7.00 per unit vs $17.00 for OM ink. The amount of money I have save is enough to buy 10 new printer.

For Canon Pixma Pro printers, printing expert Jose Rodriguez recommends the generic ink of only Precision Colors. I use it myself in my Pro 100 and have had no problems with it in about a 1 1/2 year period.

I have let my Pro100 sit for months and it always starts right up with no printing glitches.

Have used Epson printers since they were an 8pin dot matrix printer and have always used OEM ink. Tried off brand once and that was a mistake.
My printer has been turned on for well over a year with occasional use now that we are retired, Anytime we need to print it works great.
Would not ever consider using other than Epson ink.............................

Thank you for all your replies. I should have stated how I use my printers. I was in the wedding/portait business for 17 years and during that period I only used the best pro labs to do all my lab work. However I am retired from that for 25 years. My occasional small prints all go to Costco, etc. My printing these days is done on a laser printer (black only) and on a low end all-in-one printer. I do not do any high end printing of any kind any longer. I have used a better quality generic ink (in my opinion and many others) by a company (22 years in business making ink) in LA with great results for what I want. What prompted me to ask my original question is: A recent all-in-one low end printer that I bought (still under warranty) started giving me ink problems (using the generic) ink previously mentioned that I have used for 12 to 15 years with never a moments worry. I was given replacement cartridges by my ink supplier without resolution of problem (the printer simply would not print when I replaced the empty cartridges). I then call the manufacture's customer service dept. and was told to run new catridges through the machine (using their brand only). So here I am asked to spend about $70. locally for their brand ink which only is where I live and sold only in 4-packs -- only then will the printer manufacturer tell me whether they will fix it or not. I bought this low end machine for $50. (it was marked down from $80). Rather than doing that I am inclined to not have the printer fixed (assuming they might fix it under warranty) and instead buy another low end machine on sale. It seems to me that Manufacturers want to sell you their high priced ink and this could be one more way to do that. You have probably noticed that I did not give the manufacturers name -- because I do not wish to make a political thing out of this. Thanks again for responding.
Thank you for all your replies. I should have stat... (show quote)

If all you want is black ink. And you aren't looking for photo quality tonal range, why use any ink? For my B/W business and correspondence, I use a Brother laser printer with long lasting cartridges that do not dry out like ink jets. The cost per page is low. The printers are extremely reliable. I have no complaints, via direct connect or wifi.

I had an Epson printer and tried 3rd party ink and it ran all over the place.
I talked to Epson and they told me that you had to use Epson ink and Epson paper or the system would not work. I got rid of the printer and went to Canon and use whatever ink and paper that i want.

Have used nothing but generic for years with no problems.
Well, there has been one. HP tries to make it impossible to use generic but makers have gotten around that.

I used OEM for two reasons 1) the exact color of the ink is consistent and exact for the print program of the printer. 2) The ink is made so as not to foul-up your printer and if problems happen the printer company will support you. Should the printer company replace it and you must return it, they won't be happy.

I also spent thousands on my camera stuff, bought a good printer, buy good paper and cut corners on ink---no.

I believe it depends on both the printer and the non-OEM ink. We had two HP printers that failed regularly and HP shamed us into using their OEM ink. Once the warranties ran out we planned to replace them with two Cannon MX922's. The first one proved so reliable that we never bought a second one. For about five years now, we have used Work for Ink cartridges (from Amazon) with almost no problems. The printer does clean itself more often than I would have expected, and one of the responses here suggested that non-OEM ink dries quicker. That would explain why the printer cleans itself more often. We print many pictures and they come out great. We're hooked on Cannon and have no problem with Work for Ink cartridges.

I can't tell you how much it cost a company who tried to cheap their way with other than OEM ink. I worked for them as a contractor. I made a comment about the ink they were using. They ignored that and went with "cost effective" ink. The fix cost a considerable mount of money. It's best to stick with OEM ink.

I've used off brand and remanufactured ink for years. I have an Epson Work Force that had a software upgrade that I downloaded. The "upgrade" stopped the printer from working with the off brand inks. I had to replace all the ink with Epson ink to get the printer to work.
I don't know what right Epson and other printer manufactures have to force you to use their ink since we own the printer. I wonder if this a case for a class action suit???

I have always used the mfg. made inks and only those. And there would never be a reason for me not to do so anymore, because I'm perfectly happy with the results I'm getting and I can rely on that. So for me, I do not take any chances! I know those inks and I know what a print will look like before its printed and I can make adjustments, so they will turn out the way I want them to look like and I always count and rely on that!
