Product Changes that are Not Improvements

I often wonder why there is a change in a product that is not an improvement. One that continues to annoy me is the power switch on the Epson V600. It used to be a left/right On/Off switch so I could tell by looking at it whether or not it was turned on. Now the switch is Push On/Push Off - no visual clue about the status of the scanner. Yes, there is a green LED, but it's on the front, and I have to turn the scanner sideways to fit on my desk.

I'm sure some of you have other complaints about "negative improvements."

Too many to list - the automobile and the RV industry is full of them... It seems that the design work is done by desk sitting engineers that do not have a clue what the real world environment is - they just put stuff together that appeals to the younger generation and fits within the budgets mandated by the bean counters...

Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, keeps making "improvements" to Outlook, but each time this email program becomes less user friendly.

Change is constant, everything else not so much. Humans are not the best for excepting change myself included but I am working on it lest I be left behind.

In my humble opinion, Microsoft is the worst offender in this than any other.

I'm willing to bet the developers don't USE the product on a regular basis either.
Yes, so many stupid designs.

We had a popular saying where I once worked: "If I was on the design review board....".

My example is my canon 77D camera dial for different modes has a center button to be held down before rotating. "Prevents accidentally rotation" this is third canon ive owned never once rotated dial accidently

My pet peeve are camera improvements--accompanied by higher prices. Do these design folks actually use their own products. Not in the lab, but in the field where conditions are sometimes less than perfect?

Often these changes can be traced to "the new one is cheaper" by a few pennies or my favorite "design a change to prove my job is necessary".

In the phone company we also had a saying, “ Yesterday I couldn’t even spell Engineer, today I is one”

Same thing with websites. Some websites I use regularly have been revamped so they look much better, at the expense of functionality. One example is the Comcast/Xfinity website, which after the revamp everything took several more clicks than it did before, and some things you could do before you couldn't do any more.

Agreed.
Some even LOOK worse.
So many look lousy on a laptop because of the banner style used.
Covers most of the body content with a "little window" to look through for the content.
(But they're the latest and greatest looks. ...not.)
