I recently acquired a Sigma 150-600C lens to use on my Sony camera. Then I needed an excuse to justify its purchase to my wife, and what better than a shot of the full moon that appeared this week.

It took several attempts to get a decent image. Focusing was a challenge and I found camera shake, even on a sturdy tripod, was an issue.

The camera was set to bracket exposures and I finally got an acceptable image, but it lacked another element to give it interest. So, I moved the moon to a location over the mangroves behind my home.

Beautiful. Did she approve of the purchase?

Great image and post processing to give it a superb composition.

Thanks for the boost to my ego. After 64 years of marriage, my wife tends to accept my GAS attacks.

Very nice result! All you have to worry about now is if you die, your wife might sell your photo equipment for what you said you paid for it (LOL).

I'm a Sony user and had owned the Sigma 150-600mm (now sony 200-600mm) , I usually go into manual focus for night shots. Then I use focus peaking to focus. I would then also use self timer for the shot. Even though the moon is a realative fast shutterspeed compared to star shots. As for the tripod, I use either an old heavy Gitzo or my newer but not quite as sturdy Carbon tripod. Nice shots, That must be the McDonalds moon....supersized it.

Nice shot - but you can make the case it would be that much better with a sturdier tripod.

Maybe you have serendipitously uncovered an opportunity to get a good tripod and head -

Thanks for your reply. I do use a Giotto MT 8361 tripod and a Markins Ball head. They are not the top of the line, but are excellent heavy duty items. Despite that, when I touched the lens to rotate the focus ring, I could detect camera shake in the viewfinder. Possibly because the tripod was on soft earth or mulch.

Other times, with tripod set on solid concrete surface, I've had no issue with focusing.

That is normal , vibration is always there at the slightest touch. It is because the lens is mounted on a limb. If it had front and rear straps there would be less transmitted vibration. The only vibration that matters is when the picture is taken. That is why I use manual focus on the night an moon shots. Self timer helps along with going to electronic - silent shutter. That eliminates any camera or lens movement other than what Mother Nature gives us. Hope this helps

The ball head is probably fine, but the tripod may be a little light. It is normal to see some movement when you touch the camera. The test of a good rigid tripod is how quickly that movement abates. I can't find anything on your tripod, btw.

Looks composited. The perspective looks wrong for the whole scene to have been shot at 600mm.

Apologies if that goes without saying.

The download looks great. Glad that you "added" the mangroves. Shots of a full moon in an empty black box bore me to distraction.
