Got gas. Actually I have been wanting a full frame. Been using DX format shoot primarily wildlife/nature with d7000 and last year half D500. Love my 500 but have the desire to go FX.
So should I spring for D850 or the Z7. Pros -cons of each . I have mix of lens between the two formats. Use Tamron 150-600 G2, Nikon 400 2.8 ais, Tamron 15-30, DX 85 macro. N
Any new lens would be fx .

Your D500's better AF system would do well for wildlife. Go for the Z7 for landscape and portraits. The new Z lenses are all fabulous.

I have both the D500 and the D850. I have looked at the Z7 in detail, but decided not to buy it. Already had the D850 and felt that it added nothing to my capabilities. I can tell you that the D850 is a full frame D500. There are some differences in the focus system and buffer, but for what you are shooting, you will not notice them. Operationally, controls are identical between the D500 and D850, as are the menus, except for a few new functions that only the D850 provides (focus stacking, negative copying, completely silent shooting, and a few more). Character of images is identical, as are image management setup options.

To my "feel," the D850 is a more substantial camera than the Z7. The impression is that a D850 would still be shooting just fine years after the Z7 is worn out or broken.

These were my impressions. Others clearly have had a different response. But the identity between the D500 and the D850 is real and not debatable.

I haven't "gone mirrorless" yet. But I can't say enough good things about my D850.

Keep the D500 for moving critters and trade in the d850 for a Z7 with the basic 24/70 f4 lens. The future of ff is mirrorless and the Z7 takes outstanding photos, their new lenses are the best Nikon makes. The reason to hang on to the D500 is the autofocus which the Z7 cannot yet equal for fast moving action. With v3 update the Z7 autofocus is pretty darn good, just not yet there.

Although I have never used a D500 I have heard many good things about it. If you are primarily into wildlife photography the D500 should serve you well for years to come.
GAS could be dangerous to our pocket specially if we do not have the lenses we need for it. Landscapes and wildlife can be beautifully handled with your D500 without any issues and your Tamron 15-30 has excellent reviews. The Tokina wide angle zooms are also excellent if you want to save some money.

Do not expect that the quality of your images are going to be better with the full frame camera.

The D850 would be my first choice. I'm just a bit prejudiced regarding EVF cameras. That comes from experience.

My professional photographer friend just traded in all his Nikon gear for a Z7 and Z6. He leads wildlife tours in Tanzania and Montana. Also grand Tetons, Lubec, Maine, Quebec and Western Mass. He loves the cameras!

Thank you for your feedback. I am very pleased with the d500, but want to add full frame to the mix. I have no conplaints on the capability of the d500.

If your doing wildlife and birds in flight and sports, the D850 is much better at tracking and keeper rates than the Z7.
If I were you, the talk on the street is that Nikon is coming out with two or more new Z models. I believe the newer ones will be much better in tracking, the rumor is that it's focusing system will be like that in the new D6. So, I would wait until the newer models come out.

That’s the approach I took. I only had one FF lens, my Tamron 90 Macro, (my old Tamron 150-600 wouldn’t work and got traded in on a Nikon 200-500 in like new condition), so I knew I’d need glass. I also picked up a “like new” Z mount 24-70 f4 and I love it. While I can use the 200-500 with the adapter, it really pretty much lives on the D500. The Z7 has become my all around camera while the D500 is used mostly for wildlife. Someone also mentioned the build quality. I think the build quality is just as good. It’s just that the D850 is bigger and heavier so it feels so robust. To me one of the appealing things about the Z7 is the size and weight. As a FF camera it’s really no bigger than my M4/3 Panasonic G9.

The D850 will use all your lenses (Hopefully) just fine.
The Z cameras are limited as to being able to use the F mount lenses.
So if you are invested in the F mount lenses the D850 will be compatible with far more lenses and it alone with the AF lenses.

I have the D 500. Last December I decided to get the D850 over the Z7. The D 850 had more to offer me than the Z7.
