B&H Impacted by the Economic Situation

On Tuesday, 5 May 2020, DP Review published that B&H has furloughed 20% of it's staff due to ongoing health crisis that forced them to close the doors of the retail location. The article does state that the call center is "busy as hell" filling orders related to work-from-home needs.

Times are tough, but I as a young sailor many decades ago, I was taught that smooth seas don't produce good sailors. I feel certain that most of us loyal customers are hoping for the quick return of those furloughed and a full rebound for the stalwart company we consider to be a vital ally to our hobby or profession.

I ordered an item from B&H over a week ago, and have heard nothing about its’ delivery.
No problem, I understand and know from experience that B&H will deliver.

Who has not been impacted with this pandemic. Here in Miami Pitman Photo, a camera business since 1928 had to close its doors and has been taking care of business through the Internet. Recently they asked for donations to try to keep the business going.
We are all into this.

I've placed several orders from B&H during this "stay-at-home" period and, while their shipping has perhaps been a little slower than usual, they've continued to deliver just as they always do.

Considering that their store has been closed for weeks I'm surprised that B&H hasn't furloughed more staff sooner. The store is only part of it though. B&H has a large office staff located in another building a short distance from the store and their warehouse/shipping dept is located in central New Jersey.
The good news is that many businesses in NY State will re-open starting May 15th. My wife, who has been working from home for the past month or so, will be back in her office on the 18th. Hopefully, all will go smoothly and things can start getting back to normal.
Oh, and in reference to this topic's title, most everyone has felt the impact of this situation. B&H will just have to make the best of it like the rest of us. Fortunately. so far as I know, they are a very financially solid company.

Thanks to all who expressed affection for B&H and respect for our furloughed workers. For the record, we closed our retail store on March 16th. It remains closed and we do not now have firm plans about reopening, although we're all eager to do so. Our offices are one block north of the store. Almost every office person has been working from home since mid-March, as I am right now. Our warehouse is in Florence NJ. It remains operational although we have taken, and continue to take, every possible step to insure worker health and safety. This includes closing Sundays for thorough cleaning and sterilization, increased social distance rules, etc. Quite a few office workers have volunteered to man an overnight shift there to clear our Passover backlog and get as many orders out to customers each day as possible.

Kmgw9v - I can check your order but I need the order number to do so.

Best of luck to you and your wife there in NY.

I really struggled with titling my post. I do realize that everyone has felt the impact, but the main point I got from reading the DP Review article is that even those employed by the "Titans" of the retail world are very much impacted. Certain obvious industries (airlines, travel and theme parks, etc.) have devastated since early on in the current catastrophe as well as Mom and Pop enterprises in many sectors. I feel certain that many businesses would love to have the financial solidity that B&H has acquired. I do hope that a sane and measured approach to re-opening can save many from the casualty list.

Stick with B&H? You could not pry me loose from them. Most recent experience with B&H was a problem in March with a remote shutter release I had ordered from them. The unit when it came had a major defective part and I sent it back to B&H requesting another of the same item. In just a short time the second unit was received and the same part was defective in that item too. Back it went to B&H and in just about 6 days from the day I sent it back I received the third item. This time it was totally operational. All during this exchange B&H hung in there with me and helped out with some of the computer glitches. No one could provide better assistance than B&H showed me in this case.

I've been waiting to order Cinestill DF96 since the lock down but it has been out of stock which I totally understand. I could order it from Ciinestill, but I have dealt with B&H for decades and i would rather order from them. That way I figure Cinestill will make the sale from B&H while giving B&H the business keeping them from closing up.
