Not a Canon shooter but your asking the right questions at the best place. I just jumped in to give you a Big Ol Howdy and welcome to UHh!!!

Nice lens for birds but a macro would serve you better for the bugs.
Just a suggestion, start another post and include something like which Canon Lens in header, you will get faster response. Good luck!
Welcome to UHH I am a Canon shooter. I use my 100mm prime for bugs and bees and my 100-400 + extenders for birds. The 70-300 is an excellent choice and with the 2x extender will still have auto focus work will give you alot of enjoyment with beautiful results.
Welcome! I am also a Canon shooter and have a 100-400 + extender for birds. I also have two Canon extension tubes:EF12 ll & EF25 ll that I use for close ups with the 100-400 as well as with my Canon 50mm 1.4. It all works very well together.
Here's a shot with my 100-400 with the EF25 extendsion tube.

I wouldn't get a 70-300. All of Canon 70-300's are variable aperture lenses that are slow and will only work in good light. I'd recommend the EF-300mm f4L IS prime lens and a 1.4x teleconverter. My other choice would be the 100-400mm f4.5/5.6L IS.
For macro buy either of Canons 100mm macro lenses. The better lens has better glass but really the big difference is the IS feature that really helps to get the hand held macro shot. (although most macro is done on a tripod)
