That was common in Korea until recently. Years ago I've seen bicycles with 18 cases of Coca Cole in bottles in wooden cases stacked on the back. Bicycles carring as many as 20 chickens and others carrying as many as 6 medium sized dogs. But you are right, still see a lot of it in China. It is still common to see as many as six people on a scooter in Philippines.
