Off-Flash Recommendation

I have a Canon T3i and am about ready to acquire my first off-flash camera. I am thinking about the 430EX II. Is this the right choice for someone who is just beginning to use off-camera flash? Do I need any connection or remore connections, or is it fired directly by the the camera. They are on sale at Amazon for $289, which seems like a good deal to me.

I think you will still need a 580 to fire it off , or maybe some wireless thing.

Your T3i has a built in remote transmitter for off shoe speedlights. So a 430ex II or a 580ex II will do well for you. There are also a couple of new speedlights that are available that are designed for your T3i.

I have a T3i and a 430EX II. The flash can be used off camera and can be directly fired by the camera itself.
No need to purchase additional gear such as ST-E2, or 580EX to be used as master.

The T3i sends signals from the pop up flash to the speedlight and works well indoors but can become iffy outdoors in bright sunlight or great distance. I was recently shooting directly over a reflective surface and wanted to trigger a side flash with my 7D. Though low power the on board flash reflected off the surface so I had to revert to my ST-E2 to get the shot. If you plan to use off camera outdoors in bright sunlight get some radio tranceivers like the YoungNou YR-622C

I stand corrected. I was not aware that the T3i was capable of that.

I just posted as commentary on the 600EX and why I use it.
It is a bit expensive but worth it in my opinion.
Canon had the flash detector in the wrong place(IN myh opinion) on prior flash to the 600ex. Nikon did it right putting the sensor on the back of the flash. 600ex is wireless superior to anything on the market(IMHO)
If your interested.
