In college I had a friend who ran for Social Chairman for our residence hall for the sole reason of having "The Duke" perform at our Winter Formal with a women's hall. He won - and kept his campaign promise.

Prefer Les and Larry Elgart - played big band at local country clubs while in college (early 60s) to make beer money -- listened to Nashville in the wee hours on the way home afterwards every Saturday night.

Thanks Mark. Ellington didn't always follow music protocol in writing or arranging. His motto was "If it sounds good, it IS good."

The Elgart band was a bit commercial but had a very strong lead trumpet and polished arrangements.

Good morning mark,

Absolutely mesmerizing / beautiful track. I have been noticing your posts only recently and have come to realize that you are one of just a few Renaissance Men left on the planet. Terrific. Please continue to carry on this dying tradition and keep posting.

All the best to you and yours and stay safe,

Terry

I remember them well. Duke was a prolific and creative writer. I might have posted hundreds of his videos.
Thanks,
Mark

He was not my favorite, but I always appreciated his creative ability. One facet of his leadership was his utmost respect and admiration for his sidemen, not universally true for all band leaders.

Thanks Mark. I am fortunate more than a lot of others. When I was stationed in the Great Lakes (Navy) area we would take our Liberty week ends in Milwaukee and did the USO thing at the Eagles Ballroom where we were treated with most of the Big Band shows. Glenn Miller, Spike Jones, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, and yes even Bob Hope and many more. What a treat and how lucky can a Young Sailor get.

Thanks Mark. I am fortunate more than a lot of oth... (show quote)

That must have been fabulous, Don!! I grew up near Asbury Park, NJ. during summer months, the big bands appeared in Convention Hall. I saw Harry James, Dorsey's, Ray Anthony, Glenn Miller, and others. It was fabulous.
Stay well - thanks for the anecdote.
