My wife dropped my D7000 onto the concrete floor of a parking garage while we were visiting Boston this weekend and the 18-105 VR kits lens snapped off! She feels terrible and wants to repair or replace the lens. Here are a few shots of the damage (only a minor scratch on the body). Is this lens worth repairing, can it be repaired, where would I send it to be repaired? Could anyone recommend a lens as a replacement?

Thanks everybody,

Rich

OUCH!! I have arepair shop near me that I trust for looking at any equipment and giving an honest evaluation of it's repairability. Unfortunately I'm a whole country away from you. But you should check for some repair shops near you to get an opinion.

You can pick up used lenses (especially kit lenses) for under $200 used.
Try craigs list and e-bay.

If you really like that lens, you can buy one on ebay for less than the repair cost.

Lots of less expensive lense have a plastic mount, which can be broken fairly easily. Suppose that lens had a metal mount. What do you suppose would have happened to the camera? It's like a sacrificial mount. Count your blessings.

go to keh.com they do their own repairs inhouse and can give you a ballpark estimate on line. also ask what you could get for it tradeing it in on another used nikon lens. very reputable company to deal with

NikonUSA should be able to tell you if it can be repaired and what the cost would be.
I upgraded from the 18-105mm to the 18-200mm. Since then Nikon has come out with a 18-300mm. If you have to replace your lens I would suggest one of those two.

The 18-105mm is a "high end" kit lens when compared to the much cheaper 18-55mm model, and it brings a much higher price because of it. If you can get it fixed for not much more than $200 that would probably be the best option, but that lens can be had for around $350 from several sources.

I'm not sure about where to send it, but Nikon is having a refurb sale this week on cameras and lenses. You might check their site out if you want to pick up a new one.

We have a repair man here on the forum. Rick Riggins from Denver. He has a web site Discount Camera Repair, yes he also repairs lens. He works out of his house so his overhead and prices are modest. See what he says Here's a link:

Good Luck. Buy her the gloves that the NFL receivers wear.:)

It will need both repairing AND an optical check, I would send it to an authorised repairer and get a quotation first. Might be better to look for a used lens.

Depending how much you rely on the camera - get the body checked out as well - you don't want surprises later.
