The flash won't fire. On the right side of the LCD screen, in the shooting mode, there is an flash icon with a diagonal slash through it. I've looked in the manual and at You Tube and at the Canon website and cannot find any useful information. Ideas?
Thanks

Wow! Just found this! I would NEVER have figured this out!

I had taken to hot shoe block insert from my old Nikon D50 and put in my SX50 hot shoe. I took it out, and now the flash works. There is a tiny microswitch in the SX50 hot shoe that turns off the flash when it is activated.

Has the flash worked in the past? If you've never used it, please know it doesn't raise automatically, you must pull it up:

1. Lift the flash.
2. Configure (make your choice, see page 142)

It is unclear whether you're responding to RicknJude, myself, or both of us. I'll repost just in case you missed my comments earlier. Please tell us if any of our suggestions were appropriate, or if you need more help.

Yes, the flash has worked in the past. Just now as I'm looking at the screen, the icon is changing between the icon with and without the slash mark. Indicating that sometimes the flash is working and sometimes not. It's a little frustrating that I can't find any reference to the flash symbol with the slash in the owners manual or at the canon website. I would think there would be a description of what the slash symbol means and how to troubleshoot it. I have spent a couple of hours on this problem before turning to UHH for help.

You might want to check the contacts on the hot shoe. Sometimes they are partially stuck and need to reset. I have seen this a number of times in the past.

I have a hunch that the camera is going in and out of flash mode. This could be due to the charging circuitry being marginal in its ability to reach flash level. This could be due to low level battery voltage (needs recharging) or a leaky component internally.

Look for the pins on top of the hot shoe. You should see a center pin and 4 pins behind it. Gingerly with a piece of hard plastic just push the pins down and release. DON'T use a screwdriver. Also look at the slots on each side and see if they look the same. Sometimes the track sticks. Again don't use a screwdriver and don't try to pry anything.

Irrelevant! He is using the internal flash.

No it's not. If any of these contacts are stuck, the camera gets confused because it thinks it's using hotshoe flash and won't fire the onboard flash. Evidently you haven't run into this problem.

The battery is at full charge. I just tried the push the pins down fix and that seems to have worked at least for now. I'll see if it's still working tomorrow. Thanks for help and suggestions.

I have this problem a lot. Usually due to crud in the contacts. There are 2 metal pieces on either side. I clean with a toothpick. Also sometimes they get bent slightly downwards and do not rise up to make a good contact and I use toothpick to try and push upward to make a better contact.
