Many times, they'll express the max requirements in file size / max megabytes (MB) for a competition. If you mean posting here to UHH, consider this discussion on why 2048-pixels on the long side is the best choice. The end of the discussion includes demonstrations from a few software on 'how to' size to this recommended size.

If you enter a competition only jpeg files are accepted.
I always upload jpeg files to the website.
Even those straight from the camera at max size.
I am not aware of a maximum size limit

On UHH the max. is 20 mb per photo or file. On a good day you might squeeze in a 22 mb.

See CHG Canon's reply for details of recommended sizing but my camera jpeg size fits in the sizes he refers to.
See Linda from Maine's reply re max website size.

If you are not going to click "store original" so that viewers can see larger in download, then don't bother with a file wider than 600 pixels. The more pixels, the more it's compressed for the thumbnail view.

Thanks for your help. My Sony a7riii makes a big file. I usually make prints, up to 16 x 20. It's a new playing field to submit for a screen. I'll use 2048 and keep the file somewhat under 20 MP. TNX AGN!
