Focal Length is going to depend on how far away you are from where they are flying over. I had the Oklahoma Air National Guard fly over my hometown hospital just yesterday and it just so happened they didn't fly directly over the hospital, but over the street that ran out in front of the hospital which I happened to be standing on. So, as they came directly overhead I only used a focal length of 100mm from my 18-400 lens to capture some great shots. (Well, what you can when you basically only get to look at the underside of the jet, since I was hoping for maybe a little more of the side of the jet. It was an experience though.)

The focal length depends on how close you are able to get, which you probably won't know beforehand. If you have a telephoto zoom, that would be best.

I was a member of the OK ANG in OKC. We had C-130 cargo planes. Which base were the jets from?

And happy birthday!

What if they’re flying something other than an F16?

Thank you for the birthday wish! I believe these were the ones based out of Tulsa. I work in surgery in Tulsa and they actually flew over my hospital on Thursday and a group of us were able to go up to the roof of the parking garage and watch them fly over. I took video that day because I knew I wouldn't be able to zoom in enough with just my phone to get any decent photos. So when I heard they were going to go over my community hospital on my birthday and I had the day off I just had to go.

It depends on where you are located relative to the flyover. If they are coming straight toward you, the optimal exposure might be different than if they pass in front of you. If you want to freeze motion, the minimum for head on is 1/500th. When I say head on, I mean on the runway as I did with the Thunderbirds in the 1965 using a Nikon F with a 135mm lens. Anything else, I recommend 1/1000th or faster.

As far as the focal length and assuming you are not an Air Force photographer with runway access, I would use the longest lens I can handhold without excessive shaking.

It doesn't matter what they are flying. When I photographed them as an Air Force photographer, the thunderbirds were flying F100 Super Sabers. For performance flyovers, the speed is kept down so the audience can see and photograph them and that speed is similar for any of the aircraft used as performance aircraft by the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds. However they are still flying very fast. So fast that if they are coming straight toward you at low altitude, there is almost no time for you to react.

You missed my pun.
F-16 the jet vs F/16 the aperture.

F-100’s must have been a while ago!
Pre-‘67!

BTW, did you go the photo tech school at Lowery AFB?
I was there in ‘74
(My guess is no since you went to Brooks...a bit more prestigious LOL!)

I went to Brook's Institute of Photography before I join the Air Force, so they gave me a bypass test at Lackland and I was assigned to Kingsley Field right out of basic. I did, however go to Lowery TDY from Kingsley Field for an advanced two month color photo processing course later on in my enlistment.

I saw on TV that the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds are performing together. Is that a rare event? could be a great photo if you could get them both in one photo.
