This is one of my preserved Japanese Beetles and although their colors are an array of quite beautiful metallic hues, they can quickly devastate the the leaves of plants.

Weird how that projection goes in front of the eye. Great stack as usual, sippy.

Kpmac, I've noticed that several beetles have that feature. I suspect that it acts like a "brush guard" to help keep objects from poking their eyes as they push their heads into foliage and debris and digging like little bulldozers looking for food.

I've never seen one of these, and they are quite beautiful! Amazing shot, Sippy.

This is what they look like on-the-hoof. Depending on how the light strikes them they shimmer with different hues of metallic colors. They are voracious eaters and they strip a leaf leaving only the veins which look like they are made of fine lace.

They are highly invasive and can be devastating to plants. Absolutely an undesirable critter to have around your home yet wonderful for me to capture and preserve as specimens.

75 years ago I used to catch these by the coffee can full. Hard to find a bug these days by comparison. Now I want to photograph them LOL.

Thanks, I've become the same way and I have an appreciation of their world myself now.

Yep sure do, I see them in the middle of flowers, not much on the leaves.
