Good post, but as far #8 is concerned, even gold would be worthless if nobody wanted it.

In a true catastrophe gold is worthless.
You cannot eat it. Food barter and other barter for real items of value will be what people want.
Food, shelter and security are valuable.
That is why guns and ammo are the true value for defending your shelter and food and hunting for more if needed.

When I visited the Burpee site last week, even their mail order vegetable seeds have a several week delay - they cannot produce them fast enough, and their plants will not be hurried.
Add, Table-Top Photography is safe and has the benefit that you can photograph an apple, then eat it.

We try to maintain a 6 month supply of basic food in case of an emergency and rotate it.
This is good for many reasons and as we see here just losing your job.
Also we maintain close to a year's supply of money for the same reason.
I know it is worthless in a total collapse but if an emergency of a personal matter occurs we can survive well enough until what ever is resolved.
Grew up with parents who survived the depression and a grandfather who survived the Mexican Revolution and both were discussed quite regularly as needing to be prepared.
