Does anybody have experience with this lens?
Have a gentleman selling one for $645 in mint condition with the carry bag.
Thank you to all who respond
I found the lens awkward. It's long and narrow and surprisingly light for the physical size. I probably have a lot more experience now vs handling one 5ish years ago when it didn't feel right for me at the time. The price is certainly right. If you're still shooting a crop-sensor body, the field of view will be useful for distant subjects, but problematic for anything close and moving.
It is a pretty good lens, you certainly won't find many other telephoto primes in that price range. It will certainly out perform most zooms, the rear element on that lens is very difficult to clean because it is recessed far into the lens.
If you buy it I am sure that you will like it, the lens does not have an IS feature but that never seemed to bother me when I had one, it is sharp and over all a good lens especially if it is in mint condition as you say it is a pretty good value.
400 prime is gonna require being some distance from your subject or a lot of foot zooming. What are you planning to shoot with it?

Probably be long enough with your crop sensor body. Not sure how quickly it focuses. I have several friends that shoot a lot with the 100-400 II and get great results. But it cost 3 times what you are looking at for the 400 prime.

Great complement to a 70-300, if you already have the zoom and need the extra reach.
I purchased that lens recently and am quit pleased with it. It is extremely sharp and, for a large lens, light weight. I found that I often was too close to my subject and had to back up to get the pic I wanted. I learned to judge my distance & so will you. It has no IS, therefor requires a tripod or mono pod most of the time. I can handhold if I am above 1/500 sec with some success. That is a very good price. I have seen a lot at $700 to $800 & up on e-bay.
At that price, it might be an older version of that lens. That is not that bad, the L series are sharp lenses. If it is, do some research and see if you can live without the features a newer lense would have. Remember that when it was released that it was a popular lens that people were happy with.
I have one. I like it It is a very sharp lens and is used frequently like CHG_CANON said it is surprisingly light for its size. That sounds like a good price !
If you’re getting into wildlife shooting it’s a great lens to start with. You’ve got the reach and it’s sharp and it’s a prime lens. Not great with an extender fitted but for birds in flight it’s really good, you can throw it around better than any other lens because of it’s weight. Go for it, you will not regret it.
When I had one.....I found it to be very sharp....even with the 1.4 TC on it.....loved the light weight status and seemed to balance very well with my7D2....

I have one and love it. I have both Canon extenders. I’m currently shooting it on an EOS R. I bought mine used too. I couldn’t be happier. I primarily use it for wildlife, especially birds. I can’t recommend it more highly.
The Digital Picture has review of this and many other canon lenses too...
