After all your advice and suggestions I did the first porch portraits tonight. I was scared to death but ended up having a ball. I used canon the 80d with 18-135 1/200 f 5.6, had 50 mm on T4i but didn’t use it. I see several mistakes (most notably I guess my reflection in the glass door, Mom & Dad’s heads on same level, cutting off feet and forgot to take iso off auto) but otherwise I’m relatively happy and now looking forward to the next one.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🥰
Love the last one!
Nice job.
(BTW: I’m an Air Force Brat born in St. John’s. How did you wind up in Alabama?)

I’m an army brat, met my hubby while working at a hospital in Trenton Ontario and we moved here in ‘94 to escape Bob Rae and socialized medicine.
Thanks again for your help.
Fun shots and great expressions. A good deed and a job are well done!
Looks like everyone had a good time

Thanks, Ed and many thanks for your help! They were such a cute family! I sent them all 80 shots and Mom said they loved them! I asked if she thought they could do it again next week or the week after when more of the advice has sunk in and she said, “sure! Happy to be guinea pigs!”

I live in Montgomery, AL. There are two Air Force bases here. Lots of my neighbors are retirees.

Well done ✔... I hope you don't mind a quick critique though. Chopping off the feet (other than the group sitting down) really is not good portrait technique. Maybe I'm out of line here, but I was taught there are acceptable points that can take place when cropping/framing. Make sure also to keep the image level - a tripod will be your friend!
...Otherwise, this is an excellent project you have going on!!
Edit: my bad!! I see you already noted the problems. Sorry, I need to pay better attention!!
You have a great project going, I agree with the cutting off of the feet and my only other complaint is on the last one. I really dislike what I call the toilet seat pose.

Hey yorkiebyte:
No worries! I appreciate the critique but am glad I had already noted the gaffs! Makes me think there’s hope for some better snaps in my future! 🤪

Thanks, Rick. Is having Mom and Dad’s heads on the same plane what gives it that term? I agree the positioning is not good.
