A relative I/ T professional worked for IBM. He said they issued Macs because they were reliable and saved $$ on service and help desk calls. Curiously, they issued Lenovo ThinkPads to guys like him who consulted on software installations for major companies.

They've offered choice for about five years, now. It’s been successful.

I’ve used both platforms since 1984. If I can find software tools to do it on MacOS, I don’t boot Windows.

My experience in industry: managers got Mac's - limited possibilities for screwing it up as "closed" environment. But perfect for presentations, e-mail, spreadsheets - bean counter stuff. For field engineers, Windows. More "open", though the I/T dept cringed at that. But a lot more apps at a lower cost. We didn't do presentations; we fixed customer problems.

I don't want to point fingers at our IT department....they do what they do. I speak to them at least once a week. I won't even place blame on the platform because it could very well be attributable to the IT dept (with my work machine). Like I said, I owned 5 (not 4 as I said before) Windows machines for personal use between 2000 and 2010. I can say I rarely enjoyed smooth sailing with any of them.
I recently got fed up with my wife complaining about her HP laptop and bought her a MacBook Pro. After 2 days of getting adjusted, she said she'd never go back.
I have 2 daughters - each with a school provided MB Air in addition to the MBP that I bought them. I recently bought a new MBP (still have the 10yr old MBP) and I have an iMac. I spend no time with any of the machines dealing with problems. Believe me....if they had something to complain about, I'd be hearing it. I haven't dealt with any issues with OS compatibility. I usually wait a few months or more to upgrade the OS.

As is normally the case - it is important to describe the applications being used. I have two kids that are using Macs successfully as general purpose machines - and they are totally happy with them. However, the other son, with considerably more demanding applications, was not at all served well with the Macbook Pro - his words were, "I drank the Kool-Aid and it nearly killed me!" which is why he went back to PC. Oh, and I did get a whisper of "Dad, you told me, but I had to find out for myself" - you know how kids are - they always have the better solution until they get in trouble.

Once again, I have no problem with Macs - they are fine. My observation is that you can get better performance for less, or a lot more performance for the same expenditure. No need to demonize Mac - unless saying it is more expensive is a negative thing and a trigger for Mac fans to circle the wagons and get them started on demonizing Windows machines. BTW, this stuff doesn't happen by accident:

https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/10/10/mac-shipments-grow-slightly-but-apple-pc-market-share-shrinks

When all is said and done - based on revenue streams - Apple is a phone and tablet mfgr, that also sells computers and portables. But you know where they make their money - that little very powerful computer that you carry in your pocket and use for a gazzilion things. But 7.2% market share hardly qualifies them as a market leader. And that has fallen from a high of around 11% just a few years ago. Could it have something to do with cost/benefit? Beancounters are generally very sensitive to stuff like that, so I am pretty confident that all of the Apple-based badmouthing of Windows might not be based in reality. Like I said, there are other reasons why people buy Macs.

And I say this as my computer did it's first BSOD (blue screen of death) as it did a core dump to the drive. A quick check showed that the cpu overheated - probably from my cat sitting on the exhaust side of the computer case. A quick adjustment to increase cpu fan speed in the system BIOS, and an order for Arctic MX-4 thermal paste and cleaning solutions will get me back in business by next week. I usually renew the paste every 3 yrs, but my tube of paste was empty. No need to call tech support, no need to bring my computer to the Genius Bar. Once I get the paste and cleaner, it will take me about 10 mins to remove the cpu cooler, clean it and the top of the cpu, and put everything back together again. I do overclock my machine, but this is the first time in 10 yrs that my cat found the top of the computer to be comfy and warm.

I have heard it said that IBM decided to go the Main Frame route and sold it's Personal Computer / Laptop "division" to Lenovo. Any truth to this?

15 years ago. To the day.
Although not really the mainframe was route, they’re actually more in the end-to-end solution route.

I have had several locally custom built PC that were powered by AMD processors. Very good machines. My second laptop is an HP Envoy powered by Intel. It has been a big pain in my....neck! I have been looking at Lenovo lap tops. They can be had with AMD or Intel. Any thoughts or opinions? I'm just trying to add to this picture.
