If your elan uses 35mm film, it is equivalent to what we call in the digital world, a 'full frame' camera.

If your elan uses film which isnt in a plastic cartridge with a supply and containment half, but is in a barrel shaped metal contailer with the small stub protruding you pulled across to the take up reel, then yes, it is a 35 mm body. (35mm was the original 'full frame')

In the digital world, due to technical limitation and retail price conscious marketing, many image sensors were made smaller then the 35mm equivalent we see in today's 'full frame' bodies.

There are half frame 35mm cameras...for cheap skates...there are stereo 35 mm cameras...for thrill seekers.....full frame is an odd term....when you think about it.
Take 120 film for instance...I've shot 645, 2 1/4, 6X7, 6X9, etc., etc. on 120 film and those were all considered "full frame."
Oh God....I'm soooo confused.....

Point taken and Sorry the disclaimer to not offend the folks shooting Rolli's, Hassleblad, Leica, and other makes of medium and larger format cameras.

The OP was referencing an Elan, which kinda made the reply specific enough IMHO :) Thanks for the walk down times past, however.

I was under the impression that all film slr cameras were full frame. Is that incorrect?

You are nearly correct in thinking all SLR's were a full frame camera. A Full Frame is 24x36mm.

Long ago, Olympus made the Pen, which was a 'half frame' camera which meant it took 24X18mm (imagine a tall portrait image rather than a half height landscape) exposures which allowed the Pen to place two 24x18 exposures on each 24x36mm 'cell'

It was both a novelty and a way to economize when shooting with more costly film stocks but made for an odd processing. It grew quite popular as some half-frame units grew to be loved in their subminiature classification.

The cameras were less costly, and allowed several Japanese manufacturers to enter the world photographic market.

Here is a link to a pretty good 'fact' sheet on the half's.

Thanks everyone. As you can tell, I don't know much about photography, but I do enjoy reading what you folks say.
