Anyones thoughts on the new camera vs the old. I am disappointed as was hoping for an upgrade to the 7, now not sure which way to go. Have a 40d now. Like the speed of the 7d. not sure if I will lose bring able to use the Tokina 11-17 on the 6D. Ideas ,anyone?

without knowing what you like to shoot, or for that matter the final specs on the 6D, here goes: (with a very broad brush)

7D: Sports, wildlife
6D: Landscape, portraiture

Obviously there's some overlap. Full frame has to use full frame glass, but I tend to buy that way anyway.

The 6D seems to be somewhat 'under-featured' to protect the 5DIII line of succession and price point. I wouldn't want the decision you have, from a 40D to ??

I don't think a 7D F/F is coming. Too many components which have to move or be re-engineered to get a FF sensor in the 7D body.

With the 6D however, Canon has allowed room for a faster shutter box, so the possibility remains for a much more featured low-end FF body.

I dont expect to see that, as they are still manufacturing the slower and AF-challenged 5DII (of which I splurged and bought two months ago...drat :) I like having the 7D for reach and speed and the 5DII for portraiture/product shooting.

7D - king of the crop
6D - pawn of the full frame

I think it sums it up perfectly.

I agree that the 7D is what it is for sensor size (not MP's). It's Canon's top crop. It may get an update, but probably not for awhile. I am a little concerned they pull it into the 70D and kill off a well built crop DSLR.

I'm guessing that the 5DMkII's are just emptying the pipeline. What does worry me is that China and Japan are in a pissing match over some islands, and Canon has said they are shutting some of their factories for now. May put a crimp in 6D numbers.

I also have the 7D and 5DMKII. I don't feel hampered at all. To me, the MKIII incorporates some of the better features of the 7D, but I can't justify the price increase over the MKII.

I use mine the same way: 7D is for action & 5DMKII is for landscape. I like the 7D's reach with the crop sensor on the telephoto end but you get ripped-off on the wide angle side. I have an EF 24-70mm L and an EF 8-15mm L so I use the MKII for those lenses.

The 7D also gives me the option of using my existing EF-S glass.

but where do you feel the 6D fits in? is it better as KG said to have the 7D (king of the crop) or 6D ( pawn of the full frame)

I guess it depends on your budget. If you really want a FF then I would either get the 5DMKII or MKIII. If you want a fast camera with high burst rate & excellent autofocus, then I'd opt for the 7D.

After seeing the spec's, I'm not sure where the 6D sits. I had hoped for something closer to the 7D in specs, but it's more like a FF xxD series.

I gotta say (at least on paper), Nikon seems to be winning the value prop when it comes to the FF market.

If I didn't have an invest in Canon glass, I'd be sorely tempted to look at a D7000 for a crop body and a D600 for FF and I love my 7D.

And, of course, if you go to the 6D - you lose the size, weight, and price advantages of being able to use any EF-S / Crop lenses you might have. They will all make the transition to a 7D quite nicely.
-
I moved from my 40D to the 7D 2 years ago - it was the right choice for me.

I traded in a 20D & 50D on my 7D (Canon refurbished) and haven't looked back since. This is truly a milestone camera in the Canon line.

I just don't get the 6D concept. The Canon website lists the body only at $1500 but as mentioned above, places like B&H are listing it at $2100. Given the feature set, if you're going to go full frame, go FULL frame. I can't help but think that the 6D is just chumming the waters.

A few weeks ago , you could b=get a 5dmkII for about 1400 thru canon on their loyalty program . ( refurb ) I wonder what the 5d sells for . There are a few on here that shoot with it and are very happy with it . I really see no advantage of this camera to a 7d owner . We will have to wait and see
