AIS lens

I need to know what AIS lens is and would it be compatible with the nikon D800.

Looks like all of them will work on the D800 (though there is no CPU- your camera will not know which lens in mounted):

AIS is Auto Indexing Shutter, and they will work on your D800, but in full manual mode only.

They will work in Aperture Priority mode as well...You just have to enter the lens data into the camera first (at least that is the way I do it on my D300, I can pre load up to 9 different lenses).. Of course you won't get auto focusing, but you will get metering in either A or M modes... Oh, the even older Ai lenses will work just like Ais lenses....The even older Pre-Ai (or Non-Ai as some people prefer to call them) must have been Ai modified in order to mount them safely...

I believe that every F mount lens will work with the D800, although some only in manual mode and manual focus. Good question though.
