This is for real. The remote for my Tivo wasn't working well, so I put in new batteries. No improvement. Being desperate to watch TV, I tried using it upside down. It works fine upside down. My first thought was it was a battery connection problem. I removed the back and held the batteries in place. No change. I tried moving them a bit. No change. Holding it right side up, it seldom works, but upside down, it works like new.
I think I'll have to take a picture of the remote, flip it right to left, and glue it onto the back of the remote.

I don't have Tivo so I'm not really familiar with the remote. However, a lot of remotes connect with the accessory through an IR signal. The signal is produced on one end of the remote by a small IR LED.
If that has worked loose so right side up the IR signal doesn't get out properly the remote won't work. Maybe if it's upside down the LED will drop back into place and it will let the IR out in the riight direction to connect to the accessory.
Purely a wild guess on my part.

The remote for my Satellite TV works in any position and sometimes when it is aimed at the recliner, which is not reflective.
Guess that was better than turning the TV upside down. Woulda been real awkward to watch☹️
Maybe you somehow wound up with the Australian model of the remote.

Funny you should mention that. I sometimes bounce the signal from the remote off the wall behind me.

Wow I was very surprised to read this because my remote is also acting weird not responding or responding in any way it wants to except if it is also what I want it to do I guess I will have to try turning it over By the way my computer is acting up too. Looks like my electronics are rebelling.

Sounds like a loose mechanical or solder connection. The orientation brings the surfaces into contact by gravity. It is likely repairable if you have good electronic skills - or you could just buy another remote.

We need better quality control.
This remote is fairly new. Tivo send me a new one because the original one started working erratically. I mentioned it when I was on the phone support for another problem, and he offered to send me a new one.
I had a problem with the remote for my 49 inch Samsung TV. The power button got flaky and wouldn't turn the TV on or off. All the other buttons did what they were supposed to do.
It is probably a model meant for use in Australia. I bet it works just fine down there.

OR you could buy a remote that works.
