First, thank you for serving.
Second these pics are of an item my Dad had. He served in the Navy for about 16 months and was discharged at the end of WWII.
He served aboard the USS Leyte and had a pic of the ship that looked like a medium sized destroyer type boat.
On line all I find is the USS Leyte Gulf, an Air craft carrier, I don’t think that’s it but he last told me this info fifty or so yrs ago. Accuracy might be very questionable.
Do you know what this item signifies and is the “N” intended to be at an angle? It’s pretty solid like that and I don’t want to break it off trying to straighten it
Thanks for looking!

Edit: that should be two pics not tow pics in thread title.

Bruce,
The Anchor itself is a WWII era Navy Chief Anchor, and the "N" is purposely intended to follow the fouled chain, so I wouldn't suggest trying to move it. For it's age, it looks to be in very good condition and I'm wondering if he was able to climb in rank (E7) in that short amount of time, or it was gifted to him by one of his superiors.

I had to do some digging around on the Silver Star attached, as I have never come across that or even heard of it. From what I found online, it's call the "Son In Service Anchor." I am still looking around to figure out if the service member had a child in the service and wore this as a tribute, or this was a token given to a family member.

There is only one other USS Leyte that I found - USS Leyte (ARG-8). The wikipedia site is below for that ship and it fits the time frame, but it's not the same class ship as you described.

I hope some or all of this helped!

Thank you Johngault007.
I don’t think my dad would have achieved that high a rank as he said all he ever did was paint the boat.
He was a civil engineer but I’m fairly certain he got his degree after serving. He was part of the Japan invasion force and received his discharge soon after wars end (to his great relief).
I don’t know where he got it as I never knew of it till many years after his death. He had no siblings and I don’t know if his dad served or not.
The silver star has puzzled all Navy Vets I have shown this to.
The USS Leyte ARG 8 does indeed fit my long ago recollections.
Thanks again and btw that was a great book you were in.

You are more than welcome. Yes, that book is amazing and just a tad better than Fountainhead (another great book).

As for the pin, I have looked through many CPO heritage resources and there is no mention of it as a cap device or collar device. So I'm guessing it was intended for family members who had children serving regardless of rank. The fouled anchor is most symbolic item for sailors around the world, so it just makes sense they would put the Honor Star on the actual CPO Fouled Anchor.

If I find anything else, I will provide and update, but it was a great exercise for my retired brain in CPO heritage!
