DNG and Lightroom 5

My stand alone version of Lightroom 5 will not preview an image from my new Sony RX100M7. I knew this going in. I’ve read of converting to DNG then opening the image in Lightroom but have also read that DNG files lose some data! Is this true? I’m not interested in an Adobe subscription. Any other ways to get Lightroom to preview the files? Possibly Capture One? Thanks y’all!

Doesn't your Sony camera come with some software, or at the very least allow you to get some software from Sony via their website and edit their raw files? I know that Nikon and Canon does. If so, you can edit them there and export as tiffs or jpgs and you should be able to convert them in a batch.

No, the DNG does not 'lose' data. It does 'strip' data, but from the file header, not the actual image data. The image 'payload' remains unchanged, being RAW and not editable. When Adobe creates the DNG, some of the camera-specific information is removed, stuff that Adobe doesn't think is relevant. The recommendation is to retain the original RAW file if / when you move to an editor that can access that RAW file directly. If you discard the original RAW, you're limited in the future only to tools that can accept that DNG as input.

REF using LR5, look at the documentation and / or the DNG Export and confirm the highest DNG version LR5 can accept as input. When you run the DNG converter, select that same version number to assure compatibility with this old LR software.

I've analyzed the 'stripped' data in the past for Canon RAW files vs the DNG. The standard EXIF all comes long via the DNG, the shutterspeed, ISO, so on. The Canon specific information like the AF mode and active AF points were removed. This data doesn't impact my ability to edit the image, but sometimes there is a need to analyze the how / why of an image, and this analysis data is lost as the DNG is not valid input to Canon DPP that will show the AF points in an overlay.

The biggest problem with dng is that it is not yet widely readable by other software. I'm sorry that a method of payment is making what would otherwise be a fantastic choice for you a reason to dismiss it. Perhaps the more expensive alternatives are to your liking - On1 Capture One Sony, DXO PhotoLab, etc are all excellent software products, but more expensive that the LR/PS subscription - if you keep your software current.

Capture One is a fairly expensive option. You could try Dark Table for free or Affinity Photo for around $US50. It is on special at the moment so would be very cheap and no subscription.

OP has a Sony camera. Capture One has a special version for Sony for free and the full version is way cheaper than the non Sony (or Fuji) version.

Have you tried the free Adobe DNG Converter software? This software is continually being updated for new cameras and provides .DNG files for you to import to LR 5. I've never had any issues with lost data including EXIF data. It's an additional step but at least you own the software rather than renting it.
