Twenty years ago hunters would go from the United States to Mexico to hunt the White Wing Dove. Now they are breeding in Texas and are moving to the northeast. I live between Dallas and Fort Worth and I have about as many White Wings as House Sparrows at my feeders. I don't think they are a problem, but still they are here.

I live seven miles from the Mexican border in a Winter Texan Resort. We have those and three other varieties. The white wing becomes so tame that I have one with a gimpy leg that will eat from my hand.

They go to Mexico, still, because of the generous bag limit. 100 birds or more sometimes in some places.

40 years ago when we live in Fort Worth and I did a lot of dove hunting in West Texas and South Texas people
would go to a lot of trouble to find white wings. Have not hunted in years, but white wings sure are plentiful
now around our place an hour west of Fort Worth.
Now they just make me smile.
Would like to have one more good Bob White quail hunt like we used to do out in West Texas in the early 1980s.

The dove never were much good. Just soon have a few quail as a Del Frisco bone-in ribeye.

First of all, great work on a beautiful closeup shot which shows the colors of the bird.

For those interested, here is an excerpt from Texas Parks and Wildlife which discusses their move north from their traditional roosting areas in the Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley.

"Historically, the white-winged dove has nested primarily in the LRGV with their distribution apparently restricted to the sub-tropical to temperate environment that reaches its northern limit here. Within the last 20 years however, a dramatic increase in nesting populations have increased throughout Texas and even into other states. The range expansion apparently started during the 1980's when citrus groves that had become major nesting areas for white-winged doves, were decimated with killing freezes. Many of the citrus groves were never replaced and an increasing human population in the LRGV has caused additional loss of habitat through development."

Here is a link to that article:

There are three indigenous dove species which are considered legal game birds in Texas, Mourning Dove, White-winged Dove, White-tipped Dove. The Eurasian Collared Dove is not indigenous and is considered an invasive species.

wwid38 Yes, they do make a great soothing, peaceful sound. I like to sit in the backyard swing and just listen. Now that we can't go anywhere, why not.

UTMike, Thank you. When I look at my downloads it makes me understand why the pros. use expensive gear.

tramsey, I have also noticed that white wings are fairly dorsal. I can walk into my backyard while they are there and most of the time not disturb them.
