Been thinking about this for some time - the original tells the "True" store of a spring time run-off in the forest - the cropped version gives to wondering if this is small and close or across the canyon further away.
C & C welcome.

I prefer #1, seeing the "whole picture". It's interesting to know that it's a stump. To me it gives more character to the picture.

Definitely number one for me.
I like the stump.
It seems to be a natural thing these days to have only the main subject be in focus while the background is not. In the first picture the background is a little out of focus. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but for myself, I like to see everything in focus. That is more the case in the second picture. In the second, however, you can see that it is a stump and not just part of a tree trunk.
Both pictures are nice. I prefer all in focus though.

Yep - that is what caught my eye as I drove by on a secluded mountain road here in the Sierra Mnts of CA

Love this shot, Harvey! I also prefer the first version. The slight background blur and the knowledge that it's a stump are both part of the story.

Andy this was on the upper Tiger Creek rd - right on curve where I was really just creeping along enjoying the roadside splendor when this caught my eye - are you coming out west so we can go on a shoot together?

I know where that is!
We were planning to be out in March, but this virus thing changed our plans. I'm spending more time working these days than I was before the shutdown, unfortunately. I have to go out in the field a couple of days a week, but when you're working from home, you never punch out, especially during these times.
We'll find out for sure when things open up a bit. I'm looking forward to going shooting with you, and of course to seeing our grands.
Andy
Ah--the stump is my state tree (Kentucky).
Definitely the first image.
