Manhattan in the Spring of 2019, Part 2: Bryant Park and Reflections

Bryant Park is 4 acres located on 6th Avenue between W 40th and 42nd Streets and backs up to the New York Public Library, which is on 5th Avenue. It is only a couple of blocks from Times Square and the nearby theater district. It is a great place in which to relax. We really enjoyed the reflections on the surrounding buildings as the sun was setting and I hope you enjoy my photos of them, as well as the park.

The namesake of the park was an American poet. Here is part of the Wikipedia entry on him: “Although he is now thought of as a New Englander, Bryant, for most of his lifetime, was thoroughly a New Yorker—and a very dedicated one at that. He was a major force behind the idea that became Central Park, as well as a leading proponent of creating the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was one of a group of founders of New York Medical College. He had close affinities with the Hudson River School of art and was an intimate friend of Thomas Cole. He defended immigrants and, at some financial risk to himself, championed the rights of workers to form labor unions.”

Very nice. People all around the place, but no one on the grass?

Thank you for your comments NMGal. One thing you notice in Mid-Town is the lack of children, which I suspect has something to do with it. I don't recall any "keep off he grass" signs. Note there is the carrousel in the park though. Maybe "it's a New York thing"??????

Notice in the second picture the green sign, "Lawn Closed". Like you, it seems strange to me not to see peopke on the grass.

That lawn is transformed into an ice skating rink in the winter. And the Christmas Market comes to the park. Bryant Park was one of the most dangerous places in New York City in the 70's and 80's. Mayor Giuliani cleaned it up during his tenure and it is now one of the jewels of the city.

Excellent photos! I visited that park in 2005--it's a nice peaceful spot among the skyscrapers.

Thanks for the sharp eye Bill and thanks for commenting. I somehow missed than and had forgotten in the year since taking the photos.
