English Sparrow Checking Things Out

This male English Sparrow (aka House Sparrow) is using the potted dwarf Mandarin Orange Tree as a lookout point to check out the yard before going down to feed.
Taken from inside my backyard blind at about 25-30 feet just before 5PM so warm afternoon light.

7DII, 100-400L mk2 @ 400, 1/400 @ f/8.0, ISO-2000 hand held processed with LR, PS and Topaz Denoise AI

It looks kind of like a very detailed painting which is a thing I do when focus is a bit soft or there is a lot of noise from high ISO and desire to salvage the image.

Thanks, many here call them "Pests". They roam in large groups and will sometimes drive other birds away from the yards and feeders.

In my yard though most of the bird species I see are either larger or in large groups also. So they have had to learn to "just get along".

Thanks.

Bit of history, in 1851 in New York City and then the 1870s in a couple of cities in the western US these sparrows were released by people who wanted the birds from Shakespeare and other English Literature here in the US. They were successful, along with starlings & rock pigeons they are now among our most common birds. Then you add in the Eurasian Collared Dove which started in the Bahamas in the 1970s when some burglars left their cages open in a pet shop as a joke. Now they are in a huge area and pests with no game bird protection enforced in almost all US states and down into Central America so far, they are still spreading.

Yes, it was a Shakespeare fanatic chap called Eugene Schieffelin who released some Starlings in New York in 1890. they bred like...well Starlings! They are considered pests over here, and they have the nickname 'Stinkers' possibly because of their (acidic) droppings which damage paintwork on cars. In Rome they have nightly patrols and loudhailers to try and stop them from roosting in the city's tree lined streets and defecating on cars parked under them. The House Sparrow is not considered to be a pest, but rather a feature of Urban life.

Yes, it was a Shakespeare fanatic chap called Euge... (show quote)

When I was a kid in our small town in Kentucky (750 population) my friends and I were "hired guns". We roamed the town with our air guns/BB guns to clear them out of trees over peoples' lawn furniture and cars. We got paid in home made cookies, glasses of milk, homemade candy, iced tea, lemonade etc. The cats liked us too, if we missed a shot they would give us a "So what happened to my fresh lunch?" look, almost as bad as "that look" from our school teachers.
