Went for a short 15 minute drive today just to see if any of the spring migrants had started to dribble into our area of Southern Ontario. None of the warblers or such were around but I did see a pair of Wood Ducks on a small stream, a Northern Flicker in the same area. With all the snow coming down or how sketchy the birds were I just did not get any decent photos. So heading back home I took a drive thru Golspie Swamp and was able to capture this photo which made the entire trip out worth while. It is a female Black Duck which is fairly common but in this setting it just worked.

I can see these ducks out on open ponds all day long everyday around me but to find one that has made her nest in the swamp where you are actually able to get up to her and the nest area without having to get out of your car is what made it outstanding.

I think you captured the essence of this bird and the background is an important part of that capture. IMHO the setting is perfect if you are not trying to sell the picture in a gallery. Puddles are where you find "puddle ducks" not floating out on open blue water. The markings on the bird are designed to provide natural camouflage which works admirable in this setting.

It's an outstanding setting because it's exactly where you would expect to find a hen Black Duck. Sure, it would be nice to have a few pretty flowers around and maybe even a blurred in the background Unicorn, but not the expected ambiance.

Shows the beauty of Camo in nature. Might like to see it at a smaller f-stop, but it is cool as is.

Unfortunately that is the lowest f-stop I could achieve with the Sigma 150-600c lens

Thank you that is exactly why I was so excited to find the hen there and she just tried to stay low thinking I would not see her. I took the shot out of my car window and drove on not wanting to bother her.

Is it a fixed aperture lens like my 600mm Reflex Sigma? I thought you could close yours down to f/8 or f/16.

Yes I can not sure what I was thinking, past couple of days my head has been in what is known as fibro fog. When I get to this point I do not drive and I probably should not be replying to posts, eye sight goes and the brain actually plays tricks on you, example you swear you did something the wife asked but its not done. Not sure which is the worst to face at that time.

So yes I can stop it down and I usually shoot that lens at f8 most likely over looked it because I wanted to get the shot and move on so I did not disturb her that much
