This airplane still owns the record as the fastest commercial passenger airplane ever made in the U.S.A. These were the days when you flew the airplane instead of operating it, as is done today.
It was fast, but also burned 3x the fuel of a comparable, not-much-slower modern Boeing twin-engine. Years ago, I do remember exceeding the speed of sound (in ground-speed) on a 777 out of Narita to Detroit one fine evening when we hitched a ride on the jetstream.
You are correct about the fuel problem. That is what led to it's demise. American Airlines had the most of this model. It even looked fast sitting on the ramp.
