Portions of the Chicago area experienced overnight temperatures in the 20s and woke to 1- to 3-inches of snow on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Below are some images when the sun started to break through the clouds in the Wrigleyville area of Chicago.

Harry Caray, a Chicago legend who infamously coined the term "Holy Cow!", stands 12-feet tall in white bronze atop a granite base outside the Bleachers entrance to Wrigley Field.

Harry Caray sang "Take Me Out to the Ballpark" during the seventh inning stretch with the microphone held out to the fans, to pick up the voices of the crowd as the fans sang along with Harry.

Wrigley Field has been the home of the Chicago Cubs since the Cubs played their first home game at the park on April 20, 1916. The park first opened in 1914 as Weeghman Park. It was renamed Cubs Park from 1920 to 1926, before being renamed Wrigley Field in 1927.

Images captures in this post all feature the Canon FD 24mm f/1.4L, adapted to a Sony a7II mirrorless digital camera using a Metabones adapture. The 24MP image files were captured in RAW and processed in Adobe Lightroom v6. Some of the images also feature an HDR effect using Topaz Adjust.

Magnolia in Spring Snow

The Magnolia is a flowering plant species named after French botanist Pierre Magnol. Magnolia is an ancient plant, appearing in the fosil record before the appearance of bees. The flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. To avoid damage from pollinating beetles, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are extremely tough. Fossilized specimens of magnolia have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the family Magnoliaceae date to 95 million years ago.

The natural range of Magnolia species is a disjunct distribution, with a main center in east and southeast Asia and a secondary center in eastern North America, Central America, the West Indies, and some species in South America.

Murphy’s has been a fixture in Wrigleyville for more than 80 years. From its post prohibition origin as Ernie’s Bleachers, selling hot dogs and beer by the pail, to the home of the Bleacher Bums in the 1960’s as Ray's Bleachers. Today, the bar continues as a hub of the neighborhood and a haven for Cubs fans, becoming Murphy's Bleachers in 1980 when Chicago Police Detective Jim Murphy purchased the bar.

Chicago's official recording station at O’Hare International Airport recorded 1.7 inches of snow.

Your flowers are terrific and unusual for you, I think, as are the memories of Wrigley Field.

Great photos, Paul. I live in Freeport, and heard about the horrible icy conditions and big accident on the Kennedy! Love Wrigleyville and going to Cubs games....sadly, not this year. I really like your angle on the photo of Harry Carey. Your photos are always beautiful, and I really enjoy/appreciate the descriptions you provide for each one. Thank you for sharing with us!!

CHG: The images evoke memories of more normal and fun times. Even those not big fans of Beisbol will be glad to hear a full rendition of “Take me out to the ballgame” when play resumes. I hope it will be before next year, but am not very optimistic for a return any time soon.
Thanks for the images and memories. I am sure we all appreciate your sharing this kind of stuff with us.

Thank you Patty! Some days I catch a bit of local news, other days none at all. So, waking up to snow yesterday morning was a surprise. Finding the official amount lead to some articles about the weather adventures away from the lakefront. Stay safe, and warm!

Thank you CWGordon! We were within days of opening day here in Chicago when the lock down began. I did a circle of the entire stadium where the schedule was posted at all the ticket windows, everything has been frozen in place for the past month. I hadn't gotten any game tickets (yet) for this season, but do have some concert tickets that likely will not happen. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank LWW, genocolo, Patty, CWGordon, Irvingite Charles! I've started to think a 24MP camera and 24mm prime is all any photographer should need! Thank you for your kind comments. And, Root Root Root for the Cubbies!

I remember one year going to Chicago in the Summertime. No way I wouldn’t catch a ball-game right? Wrong. Comiskey was being torn down, Cubbies away. Planning was never a forte! But, I was with a new girlfriend and we did the U P. So, it was a great trip, anyway. Saw some mighty big sand dunes, great festivals, the lobby of the big old hotel on Mackinac (w/o paying), and much more, all with the vibe of the 1940’s and 1950’s. What a great place for Photography is the Upper Peninsula. I hope it remains in a time warp as it was still in the 1990’s.

Thanks for the memories. To get the Harry Caray sang the opening "Take" with a slur (a musical term, not a putdown.) I've only seen it on TV, but thanks for the memories.
