The places where we buy groceries for us no longer sell the "Squirrel and Critter" food I've been filling the squirrel feeder with, so I took that as a sign that I should stop filling the squirrel feeder. Today was the first day of putting nothing in, so of course we had late season snow - and the squirrel had to join the birds in looking under the bird feeder for breakfast as I and one of our cats watched from the warmth of the Den window..

For us suburban folks that's a good way to attract rats.
Just saying....

The edge of South Bend is not "country". In seven years here, we have gotten deer, raccoons, birds, and squirrels - but no rats. Oh yes, we have also had one mouse in the house, but our two cats took care of it.

I have come to respect the resourcefulness shown by these follow mammals.

Livonia, Michigan isn't country either. And we also have deer, possum, skunks, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons and RATS. Authorities advice is to keep the food off the ground and up in the air...

My "not country" comment was to indicate that our neighbor is neither 'country' nor really 'urban', so I guess we are would be a suburban area - but we don't really have a nearby urban area.

I happen to enjoy watching our squirrels and their resourcefulness - and I have never seen a rat or evidence of one. I suppose people in your area might be especially sensitive to attracting rodents 'visiting' from Detroit.

This food on the ground is dropped by the birds.
If your authorities want to come down here to pick it up .....
