Not everyone realizes that Nikon raw files are a proprietary raw format "NEF" (I believe that's for Nikon Electronic Format) with file extension ".NEF" which can ONLY be processed via Nikon software, CaptureNXD and CaptureNX2 (NX2 which was discontinued in 2008, but several Nikon photographers still prefer to use including myself).

That's not correct. There's many applications that successfully process Nikon .NEF files besides Nikon's own Capture NX-D. To name a few:
Lightroom
Capture One
On1
ACDSee
DXO PhotoLab
SilkyPix
Affinity Photo
DarkTable
PhotoNinja
RawTherapee
Luminar
LightZone
and others

New to shooting and post-processing in RAW. Using a Nikon Z6, shooting RAW + jpg (until I'm comfortable in RAW) and post processing using Cordel Pro software that originally came with the camera. I download pics to the computer, open up Cordel and see the pictures downloaded. Open up 1 to work on and it appears for about 4 seconds then turns into a series of thin colored horizontal lines. Pictures still appears in the file list but not on screen to work it. All the same for each picture. What am I doing wrong???

Also if you register your camera you get 20gb of free storage in Nikon Image Space. Which is handy because of the features allowing you to search pics by anything. Shutter speed aperture lens ect. It also keeps stats of what you use the most lens wise shutter speed ect. Neat free toy.

Thanks for the response. I knew the previous post was incorrect but didn't know about the neat 20gb option. Will look into it.
Nikon also respond about 3rd party post processing software - clearly Corel is not for Nikon.

I have had various problems processing NEF (RAW) files. My suggestion is to turn them into TIFF files. Nikon's ViewNX-i is a free download from Nikon that will easily do the conversion.

The first thing this guy does is convert his images to TIFF.

Yes Corel came with the kit, so from the retailer. Will make the change as you suggest. Thanks.

Corel Paintshop Pro is a powerful and versatile processing software and worthwhile learning. Many have suggested using the Nikon Raw processing software which will work quite well. Someone suggested that Corel Paintshop Pro is not a Raw file processing, which I believe is incorrect. I have been using Paintshop Pro for 10+ years. Personally I use RawTherapee for Raw file processing and then further process in PSP. RT and PSP work seamlessly together once you get it set up. RT is free software and can be found at this link >>>http://rawtherapee.com/

Your original post stated Cordel Pro. If Cordel is not a typo for Corel, you can ignore this post
