You will lose auto focus, but can still get great shots in manual focus, it just takes practice. Happy Shooting.

Do you know that it will lose AF, or is this a prediction based on how these things tend to work?

A few years ago, while I was still a Canon user, I was told by users here that a 2X TC would not work with my camera - but I got a good deal on an old Kenko so I bought it - and it did work. I guess the camera didn’t know that it wasn’t supposed to work.

I do not have it but hope the answers are NOT theoretical BS but from those who have actually done it. Perhaps some examples as well. Looking forward to knowing.
Sadly there will be a lot of pontification of those with no clue and express their prejudices with no real knowledge.
PS the scenery is beautiful in your shot and the deer look pastoral. Have you tried cropping it in a bit?
Again nice shot.
I do not have it but hope the answers are NOT theo... (show quote)

Attached shot using a Sigma 150 Macro lens with 'Dedicated' 1.4 extender. I have the 150~ 600 Sigma C , but the 1.4 extender is not designed (or dedicated) for the 150~600.

I have the Sigma 150-600 C version and a Sigma TC1401 (1.4x). I use this combo on a Nikon D500. I have no problem using the autofocus on the D500 but I'm not sure if it will work on the D5200. Regardless, I have done some testing looking at using the TC1401 vs cropping in PP and using the TC wins by just a hair at the 600 mm focal length (need to look carefully at 1:1 to see the difference).

Has anyone ever put a tele converter lens on a sigma 150-600 lens? My hubby got me one so i could take close ups of deer, birds etc when we are in the car. It doesnt get the picture he hoped it would when at the 600 point, would a tele converter lens help? i have a nikon d5200. thank you for any advice

It may be a good idea to work on techniques to get closer to your pray. Right now, with your Nikon D5200, at 600mm on your Sigma, you have an angle of view of 900mm. That should be good enough for MOST wildlife.
So grasshopper, work on getting closer to your deer. Taking a shot over a wide open field will not get it done. Get into a blind, sleep over night in it where you know the deer are.
If your state allows feeding stations for deer, use that. Set up a deer feeder, get into your blind, and then just wait. Sometimes you have to wait hours, sometimes minutes.
Study the movement of the deer, find out where you can ambush them at close range.
Photographing wildlife is more than the lens, you must really get into studying your intended targets, get to know their habits, and you will become a better wildlife photographer.
The following is free, but there is lots more info on line on how to get close. Check them all out.

I have a Sigme 150-600 contemporary and a sigma 1.4 teleconverter. I use it with my D500. Autofocus works fine in full sun. Sometimes it searches in shady areas. I haven't tried it on my D5300. When I need long reach, it's usually focused near infinity, so manual focus isn't a problem. Just like the old days.

I believe the fuzziness in the bottom pic is caused by camera shake. That was shot at the equivalent of 900mm, probably hand held.

For all the bad-mouthing about teleconverters, I like my Kenko 1.4. For $140, I got something that can extend the range of all my lenses, and I like the resulting images.

I have a Sigma 150-600 Sport. I chose it over the C because of build quality and sharpness issues at 600. I've seen some reviews that say the C is sharper, but that was not my experience. I also have a couple of teleconveters, Kenko and Sigma. Both work well but AF is definitely slower and less precise on a D800 and a D810. While I can hand-hold a full frame camera and the lens without the TC, my percentage of vibration free images goes down considerably if I try with the TC in use. I won't even try to do this with a crop sensor camera, which would result in an effective 1260mm lens. A big sturdy tripod would be needed for that.

You should rent and see what works best for you.

When in the car, if you’re shooting from inside the car, you might want to pick up a bean bag to help steady your camera.

Sorry I clicked the Add Attachment button twice.

In regards to using a teleconverter on a lens. I have an Olympus E-M1-MK II. For this image I was using the Olympus M Zuinko Digital ED 40-150 mm f/2.8 Pro Zoom lens with a 2X Teleconverter. This Teleconverter is designed for the 40-150 lens. It was shot at f/8 - 1/500 sec, ISO 400 with the focal length being 300mm.
Granted you loose f/stops with a teleconverter but if the teleconverter is designed for the lens it works.
By the way, this shot was taken out of a car window while the vehicle was slowly moving. It was a quick glance, oh bug, point- shoot. I was very pleased and surprised the way the shot came out. I must have been lucky to get the focal point right on the bug. Just my 2 cents.

I bought a Sigma 150-600mm Cont. last year, and within the last month, bought the 1.4 Sigma TC to use on my D7200. I'm a hobbyist, not a professional. I'm happy with the Sig combo. I always use a tripod because of the weight, and always use a wireless remote release. As stated above, you will lose some sharpness and you will have to manually focus, but for me, I choose a spot where I expect my subjects (birds, wildlife and people) to be, manually pre-focus and wait for the opportunities to arise. I am satisfied with my captures but I am not a perfectionist nor a professional. I was surprised with the sharpness I was able to achieve. As long as you keep your expectations realistic you should be happy with the extended reach. MM

I have a D500 with the Sigma 150-600 lens with a 1.4 TC . You do have to have good light for it to AF. But mine works great.

In reading your post, you explained something for me. I thought I had AF'ed in the past with this combo (D7200, Sig. 150-600 C. and the S 1.4 TC) and yet other times, it I couldn't AF. Must've been an available light issue. Live and learn. MM

I'm not certain if this is pontificating, but I think there are really only two sure ways to improve this image: you must get closer to the deer or they must get closer to you. In this particular example, there is no combination of equipment that is likely to give you the results you desire.
