Focus Stacked Image of a Horse Fly Biting Parts

This is an expired Horse Fly that I found that was in pretty rough shape so I posed for a focus stacked session to show its "biting part". If you've ever been bit by one of these rascals you know that it hurts like the dickens and now you can see why when you see the sharp tooth like fang that they have.

When I was young, my dad farmed with horses. If one of these horse flies would bite them, they were almost uncontrollable in the harness -- almost like being stung by a hornet or bumble bee.

Now I understand why that hurt so much. Thanks for that informative photo and post.

Thanks, I enjoy seeing things under magnification that I typically can't see otherwise and it is a pleasure to share them.

Oh yeah..! I'd be at the pool on a hot summer day and those sun-of-a-guns would land on my back and "Ouch". I imagine that a poor horse would be tormented by them constantly when they land where their tails can't swat them off.

Great shot. Lived in a tent on the edge of the Everglades for almost 3 years defending the Country from Castro. Believe me I know all there is to know about being bitten by Horse Flies and all other bugs.

Very nice, sippy. My horses hated those things. They carry infections, too.

OUCH! They do hurt. I’ve seen horses take off and run when being bitten by one of these critters.

Aw, Cuba, 90-miles to communism. As time goes by many forget what a threat they were or could have been. Still one of the most economically oppressed countries. The average wage is equivalent to $9-dollars a month U.S. I can imagine that you saw more than your share of bugs down there.
