After investigating what kinds of switches people have put together to do remote shutter release on non-remote Canons using CHDK, I decided to dig through my junk box and see what I could build for free. And now that I have a cable release for the SX30, I'm pretty sure I'll use it all the time!
This was made from a 4xAA battery holder (from who-knows-what old device), and with 3 batteries delivering the proper voltage, there's space for mounting the switch in the 4th battery space. Turns out to be passably comfortable when held also...
Please tell us which wire goes where in the USB cord.

USB red wire = ~5v positive
USB black wire = negative
