I would like to say something profound -- WOW. Nicely captured Linda, love the lighting, background is perfect, I think I'd call this a keeper

Thank you for keeping me smiling these dark days, Jack.

I shot that (unknown-to-me name) while walking my dog around my apartment complex this morning. I would have passed it by if not for the light and shadows.

I sometimes wonder what neighbors think when I move to the non-sunny side of the tree out front so I can get backlit leaves and blossoms

Probably the same thing mine do when they see me when they see me with my head stuck in a bush buzzing with bees

Beautiful Linda, love the bright flower contrasting with the leaves, light and shadows. Possibly Mahonia.

Thank you Sylvia, I'm very pleased you liked it. I looked up your ID and it appears that "Tall Oregon Grape" is the common name for this particular mahonia - Mike will know for sure Appreciated!

Beautiful, Linda. Iā€™m pretty sure the first one is Holly. The yellow flowers are beautiful against the dark leaves and background. The backlit blossoms in the second shot are stunning. The right light makes all the difference!

Thank you, Carol; this variety (species?) gets around. Now I'm seeing a common name of Oregon Grape Holly (Mahonia aquifolium).

Participating in R.G.'s recent Landscape Forum topic on foregrounds here, I was reminded of how often I am drawn to the light while neglecting other aspects that make a photo successful

Your time and interest are much appreciated.

Thank you Sandy! I should have mentioned lighting upfront: direct sunlight around 9:45 this morning. Shadows are from overhanging trees and surrounding thick area of bushes. I did clone over some of the lighter sticks behind and to sides that I thought were interfering with the composition + apply a Nik low key filter

Appreciate your interest!

Sure looks like Oregon Grape Holly to me Linda. One key is the stems that turn red. Here's a shot with more light for you to compare. Grows a lot west of the Cascades.

I like this one!

I thought this one was Pin cherry, but that species doesn't occur in Washington. I am guessing Mahaleb cherry, planted as an ornamental in a residential setting.
