Yes it is. As you can in the photo the Vacancy sign is off. When I passed it the night before this shot the parking area was completely full.

I guess its all in what you are looking for. I've driven it dozens of times and see something new to photograph every time.

In 2003 I went to Vegas with a friend for the only time in my life, during our stay we took a bus trip out to the Grand Canyon, we traveled on RT 66 and I can't say how many hours we drove on that Rt, but in all of the hours that it took us to get to the Grand Canyon, we went over the Hoover Dam and we stopped at a tourist stop and there was nothing else to see for miles you can turn that part of the country into a land fill.

Them's fightin' words! I think you must have been lost Mr. Pentax. Don't blame God's country on your map and navigation failures. Rt. 66 doesn't go anywhere near Grand Canyon. No wonder it took you so long to get there! Are you sure you found the right canyon? How about the right state? I took a look at your membership info. Sounds just like an East Coaster to me.
As far as turning it into a landfill, why? We already have one. It's called the East Coast!

You must be having problems reading your map. Route 66 goes through Williams AZ, traditional gateway to the Grand Canyon.

My bride and I drove through Tucumcari back in '76 on our honeymoon. We had decided to See America First! Drove from Long Island, NY and got as far as Las Vegas when time ran short and we had to turn back. While I don't have photos from Tucumcari, the trip is recorded at https://phrubin.smugmug.com/Honeymoon . I was using my new and first serious camera, a Minolta SRT100. I only had a 50mm lens, but at the Hoover Dam I was fortunate to bump into another tourist who had a 17mm that he let me borrow.

Edit: I had built up a vacation account at work and was able to take 6 weeks.

No, no problems at all reading maps. Williams and Flagstaff AZ. are both gateways to The Grand Canyon. There are numerous other approaches as well. Depending on how scenic you want to get. I suppose you have to decide what nowhere near means. It's still a 50 mile + or - drive north to the Canyon. And any stretch of I-40 also considered to be Rt. 66 is a heck of a lot further than that.

HEY!!! I stayed there!! 1998! Drove my Beemer (top down all the way) from Fairbanks, AK to Tijuana then back to Santa Monica and headed to Chicago!! BEST time ever!! Funny thing though, every hamburger joint, "cozy dog," soda fountain, root beer stand was packed with old farts runnin' Rt. 66!!! ... didn't make a single picture... what an idiot! OK, did get a shot of the Bagdad Cafe... it was closed... Glad to see others have done the right thing.... Ya know.... think I might do it again!!

Really folks, some of the best (and historic) photographs can be had on this highway. I have occasion to drive portions of this road at least twice each year because my children and grandchildren live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Once this virus situation is over I will once again be taking my cameras "on the road" and one of my goals for later this year or early next year is to drive the entire length of Route 66.

I've posted a shot taken in Tucumcari, NM a few weeks ago. I passed this scene late one evening and took a few photos. Upon review I decided that the blue hour would work better. I set my alarm for 5:00 am and made sure that I was set up for the shot during the morning blue hour. This is the result.

Thanks for bringing this up.

We've done the entire route 3 times. Looking forward to it again in 21 and probably last time in 26 for the centennial celebration.
