We took a walk in the state forest behind our house this morning. I spotted this Great Horned Owl roosting against the trunk of a pine tree.
We hear great horns and barred owls but this is the first time we've spotted one!

Wonderful shot. I have a pair nesting in a tree across the alley from me that I haven't been able to fine in two weeks of looking

Thanks for all of your comments everyone! I feel very fortunate to have spotted this one. We often hear owls at night, most often barred owls and sometimes great horned owls. I’ve looked for owls during our woods walks but this was a first!

These birds are really hard to spot, congratulations. I was on a photo trip in Costa Rica and our guide spotted two owls sitting high it a tree. Everyone was set up and shooting, I couldn't see the birds! The guide asked "Can you see that dark area up there" I said yes, he said "start photographing it". It wasn't until I downloaded the files that I actually saw the owls.
