Some photographers prefer their water to be silky and shot with a slow shutter. I like many others prefer a fast shutter which is closer to what the eye actually perceives.

Very nice. I like the water to look normal. Have never understood why anyone likes it to look "silky". Seen as the eye sees it is silky enough for me!

Generally, I agree with the above comments.
I have found water flow that is very slow or thin, needs help to show movement. A slow shutter duration can come to the rescue.

My tastes depend on the structure of the fall(s).
Each fall is different and will look better or worse with higher or slower shutter speeds.

I like silky water in some instances. It depends on the available light and the overall composition.

Fast shutter - closer to reality.
Slow shutter - more artistic impression.

I am a normal water guy, but am often accused of not being artistic (LOL).

When shooting waterfalls or running water my tendency is to shoot with a fast and a slower shutter speed. I tend to go more toward the fast shutter speed because as it has been said the water looks more natural.
A large proportion of photographers shoot the water with a ND filter and very slow shutter speeds and the result is that all of those images look the same. Beautiful? perhaps but monotonous yes.

Image #1 is very nice, #2 has blown out highlights.
I like to see a mix of silky & real.
