Was watching a Nikon training video
(All their training videos are free for the month of April https://www.nikonevents.com/us/live/nikon-school-online/?&utm_source=MKT&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FreeNSO-4-1-2020&utm_content=btn&utm_term=startnow&ET_CID=3269339&ET_RID=627708400&SC_ID=0031o00001r9KnjAAE
I received an email about the free training, but I'm assuming it is for anyone

Instructor was shooting a ballet dancer in spotlight with 50mm f/ 1.8 lens, spot metering (background was all dark)

Said to use aperture priority instead of shutter priority: Why?

He used settings below
Aperture priority
Aperture f/1.8
Auto ISO ON
Set Max ISO sensitivity to 8000
Minimum shutter speed to 1/640

Is there any advantage using his settings Vs Manual
Aperture f/1.8
Shutter 1/640
Auto ISO ON
Max Sensitivity 8000

If you shoot aperture priority set at wide open you will get the fastest shutter speed for the ISO you are using. I would like to add a question - Is manual truly manual with on auto ISO? - Dave

For me it's not but let not argue about terminology. You know what it does.

No, M+Auto ISO is not "truly manual". But why is that important? It's just another camera mode (my favorite!)

I had originally written something else, then double checked my manual.
In A & P modes the camera will not increase the ISO until the minimum shutter speed setting is reached.
In M & S modes the camera begins to increase the ISO at the shutter speed the camera is set at.
I don't see any advantage in using his settings over your M settings.
