Packing for a trip at present and had a revelation. That lens had been my constant companion on trips to every continent, some several times, since its purchase very soon after canon made it available.
The revelation is I realized it has been sitting at home for a year or so, my iPhone 10 has superseded it.

That photography is changing, perhaps.

I had that lens. Very sharp but big and heavy.

Many photographers are using the lighter 18-55 kit lens with excellent results.
Just ask Sylvia.

I had the Nikon version of that lens and while I upgraded to the 24-70 f2.8 when I went to FF, it remains a favorite. Yes, it was heavy, but I got some great shots with it!

I have had the Nikon version of this <DX Gold Ring> lens for 12 or 13 years. It is every bit as good as the 24-70mm f2.8, maybe a little better, and is still my preferred general service lens for the D500. Yes, it is a little bit bulky, but proportionally less so than the 24-70. I have looked at several newer options to replace it in recent years, including the 16-80 variable aperture, but have not found anything else that measures up in terms or performance or build quality. So I just cleaned the rubber grips really well and am finding it to still be essentially like using a brand new lens.

It has become my go to lens now for about a year. Paired with a Canon 80d it takes incredible pictures.

Yes, I agree.
The Nikon version was made before Nikon had full frame digital bodies.
This is a pro build lens, just made for the smaller sensor.
The best DX zoom lens in Nikon's lineup.
